Clean your gutters at least twice a year, typically in the spring and fall, to remove leaves, twigs, and other debris. This prevents blockages that can cause water to overflow and damage your home's exterior or foundation.
While cleaning, inspect your gutters for signs of damage, such as holes, rust, or sections that are sagging or detached. Promptly repair any damage to ensure your gutters are functioning correctly.
Check that your gutters are sloped correctly towards downspouts to prevent water pooling. Water should flow freely to and through downspouts, diverting away from your home’s foundation.
Make sure downspouts are clear of obstructions and extend them at least 5 feet away from your home’s foundation to prevent water damage. Consider adding splash blocks or a downspout extension to further direct water away from your home.
Look for signs of water damage on your home’s exterior, such as peeling paint, rotting wood, or mold growth. These signs can indicate that gutters are not properly diverting water away from your home.
